A long-closed pedestrian footbridge at Clare Glen near Tandragee is set to be removed before the end of the year, with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council issuing a tender for the work.

The contract, valued at just under £150,000, includes enabling works and has a tender deadline of October 13. Work is expected to begin in early November and be completed shortly after Christmas.

The bridge has been closed since 2023 due to structural deterioration. A council report from June 2024 stated that timbers and support pillars were examined by a structural engineer and deemed too hazardous for public use and beyond economic repair.

Newry and Armagh DUP MLA Gareth Wilson said he understands from discussions with the council that preparatory work is underway for the removal, subject to securing finances. He added that work is also taking place to formalise a business case for a replacement footbridge and to address erosion on paths.

Wilson said engineering solutions for the replacement are being assessed and welcomed the progress, noting he had lobbied for the project prior to leaving his council role.
