St Mary's University College Belfast Principal Highlights Student Sports Participation
Professor Peter Finn KSG, Principal of St Mary's University College Belfast, sent a message to staff and students on 31 March 2026 outlining student participation in inter-university sports.
He noted involvement in teams for ladies Gaelic football, camogie, netball, senior Gaelic football, freshers Gaelic football, hurling and soccer.
The ladies Gaelic football Lynch Cup team played DCU and DKIT, exiting at the group stage. The second team lost to Ulster University Magee in the championship.
The camogie team, led by Dara McGahan, beat TUD in Dublin but lost to Ulster University Magee and ATU Galway, missing qualification.
Netballers qualified for the SSI Netball League Final but lost to Queen's University. Dr Elaine McLaughlin managed the team.
The senior Gaelic football team lost to Maynooth by two points at Davitt's GAC in Belfast, then to ATU Galway in Blanchardstown.
The freshers Gaelic football team lost to ATU Donegal, beat TUS Midlands, then fell to SETU Carlow in the quarter-final.
The hurling team, managed by students Eoghan Mullin and James Duggan, completed group stage matches against Royal College of Surgeons, Ulster University Magee and Dundalk Institute of Technology.
The soccer team reached CUFL League Quarter Finals and lost 2-0 to Ulster University in the Crowley Cup.
MSc student Fergus Bryce won gold in Double Sculls and silver in Quadruple Sculls at British Universities Championships representing Queen's University.
Darragh Croarkin from Monaghan, Grace Shannon from Antrim and Oisin O’Kane from Tyrone received Enhanced GPA Bursary awards for the MSc in PE and Sport for Young People.
