Holiday Hunger Bill Advances in Northern Ireland Assembly After Second Stage Vote
A bill to provide financial support to 90,000 children receiving free school meals during school holidays passed its second stage in the Northern Ireland Assembly on Monday. West Belfast MLA Danny Baker introduced the Holiday Hunger Bill, which now proceeds to committee stage.
Fifty-five MLAs voted in favour. Twenty-four MLAs from the DUP and TUV voted against.
Danny Baker stated the bill supports disadvantaged children and families amid the cost-of-living crisis. He noted the Education Minister's lack of support and affirmed Sinn Féin's commitment to advance the legislation with all parties.
SDLP Councillor Paul Doherty called for full funding of the bill. He highlighted increased demand for food support from community organisations during school holidays. Doherty urged the Sinn Féin Finance Minister to collaborate with the Education Minister to secure funding.
Education Minister Paul Givan opposed the bill due to its costs. He said it would burden the department's budget and harm children's education.
