Yousef Aljamal, an academic, journalist and author from Gaza, will speak in Omagh on Wednesday, April 22, at 7.30pm. The event takes place at the Strule Arts Centre.

Aljamal coordinates Gaza work for the American Friends Service Committee. He serves as a non-resident scholar at the University of Malaya in Malaysia. He wrote 'Displaced in Gaza', which collects eyewitness accounts from Palestinians on life during conflict and displacement.

The Omagh appearance belongs to an all-Ireland speaking tour. Organisers plan for the evening to cover Palestinians' lived experiences in Gaza. An extended question-and-answer session will allow attendee questions.

Aljamal was born in a Gaza refugee camp. In August, an airstrike hit his sister's home in the early morning. The strike killed his sister, her husband and three daughters. Their 14-year-old daughter Noor survived after rescue from rubble with serious injuries. She underwent surgery.

Aljamal noted that Noor called for her parents as medical staff took her into the operating room. He referred to her as a wounded child with no surviving family. His sister worked as a journalist and educator. She taught local children after schools in the area closed due to destruction.
