Fermanagh Couple's Houseboat Sinks in Storm, Forcing Restart
A houseboat owned by Sarah and Red Donlin sank in Co Fermanagh during Storm Dave on April 5. The couple had relocated from Belfast to the Lakelands in June of the previous year to live on the water.
Red noticed running water inside the cabin at 11:45pm while settling into bed. Water rapidly submerged his feet as the boat filled. Sarah was already asleep at the time.
The pair attempted to remove the water using a pump and bucket but abandoned the effort as it proved futile. They took their dog Stanley and select belongings before evacuating.
Forty minutes later, the boat was almost fully underwater. The couple received temporary housing from local residents.
Local resident Darren Gilmore raised the boat from the water to allow assessment of damage. Repairs are required to make it habitable again.
A friend set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist with recovery costs. The couple expressed relief at escaping unharmed and gratitude for community support.
