Police in Derry arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of four counts of attempted murder after he drove a car into a house in Altcar Park, Galliagh area of Londonderry.

The incident began around 2:40am on Tuesday, April 7. Officers found the man armed with an axe deliberately ramming a vehicle into the residential property.

Superintendent Claire Hamilton stated officers used incapacitant spray twice to stop the man's actions. The suspect then produced a knife and kept driving into the house.

Police fired an attenuating energy projectile at the man's leg after prolonged negotiations to reduce risk to the public and himself.

The arrest occurred just before 4am. The man remains in custody.

Extensive damage affected the property and a nearby vehicle. Four occupants inside suffered no injuries.
