Fermanagh Council Plans Bid for Enniskillen as UK Town of Culture 2028
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council plans a bid to designate Enniskillen as the UK Town of Culture for 2028. The council scheduled three consultation sessions to identify Enniskillen's cultural distinctiveness and stories for national audiences.
The first session occurred at the Ardhowen Theatre on March 25 from 4pm to 7.30pm. A second took place at Fermanagh County Museum in Enniskillen Castle on March 26 from 1pm to 4pm. The third happened online on March 27 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.
Consultations also aimed to assess programme potential, priorities, and contributions from local partners for delivery and legacy. The UK Government launched the competition this year as its first edition for towns.
Three finalists, one each from small, medium, and large categories, will compete. The winner receives £3 million, and runners-up get £250,000 each to implement bid elements.
Expressions of interest must submit by March 31, with a shortlist due later this year. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that towns hold rich local history, festivals, and celebrations that shape national stories and deserve to showcase their unique contributions.
