Northern Ireland MLAs Set for £14,000 Salary Increase from April 2026
Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly will receive a basic salary increase to £67,200 from 1 April 2026. The Independent Remuneration Board made the determination, raising pay from the current £53,000 level by nearly £14,000.
The board applies the change to all 90 elected MLAs. Chairperson Alan Lowry stated the board aimed to set pay that matches the work of assembly members while keeping the process independent.
The board based its decision on the role's responsibilities, comparisons with pay for elected representatives in other UK legislatures, and inflation effects. MLA salaries had not faced a full review for several years.
New rules introduce salary reductions for MLAs if no Executive forms after an election or if the First Minister and deputy First Minister posts stay vacant. Penalties apply in stages if institutions fail to form within legal timeframes.
The board issued the determination after a consultation with MLAs, the Assembly Commission, and pension trustees.
