Belfast Businesswoman and Son Granted Bail After Drugs and Rifle Seizure
A Belfast businesswoman and her son received bail from court after police seized drugs, a rifle, cash and jewellery from their home. The searches took place at a house in Danesfort Park Place on February 20.
Hanita Rai, 56, faces charges of possessing criminal property and cannabis with intent to supply. Her son Christian Rai, 25, is charged with possessing cocaine, MDMA, magic mushrooms, cannabis, ketamine and zopiclone with intent to supply. He also faces accusations of possessing a firearm and ammunition in suspicious circumstances, having criminal property, and using someone to mind a dangerous weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Officers recovered suspected Class A, B and C drugs, a gun, ammunition, £11,000 in cash, high-value jewellery, gold, diamonds, laptop computers and mobile phones. Large bags of herbal cannabis were found in Hanita Rai's bedroom along with the rifle.
PSNI detectives are working with other law enforcement agencies to investigate the suspected operation. A police detective stated that preliminary inquiries suggest Hanita Rai may operate an international money-laundering network, though she faces no such charges.
Crown counsel noted Rai's international business interests and a planned four-week trip to Indonesia. The Economic Crime Unit is examining her documents and financial affairs.
Hanita Rai denies knowledge of the gun or drugs and states the jewellery was gifted to her. Defence counsel said she has lived in Northern Ireland for eight years and travels abroad to support family.
Madam Justice McBride granted bail to Hanita Rai with conditions including a £50,000 cash surety and surrender of travel documents and passports.
