Carrickfergus Bookshop Wins Independent Bookshop of the Year for Island of Ireland
The Secret Bookshelf in Carrickfergus has won Independent Bookshop of the Year for the island of Ireland at the British Book Awards. The shop, which opened in 2020, earned the award for the second time in three years after also receiving it in 2024. Organisers shortlisted it in 2025.
Owners Jo and Chris expressed delight at the recognition. They credited their team members Deborah, Grace, Bethany and Gemma, along with customers and family support.
The award recognised the shop's community efforts over the past year. These included hosting a book festival in summer 2025 and refurbishing the children's room with sensory features for accessibility.
Staff conducted outreach with local schools through pop-up bookstalls. They also arranged an author visit for World Book Day in 2026.
The Secret Bookshelf operates from The Courtyard in Carrickfergus.
