Antrim and Newtownabbey Council Hosts Carers Event for International Women's Day
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council organised an International Women's Day event at Theatre at The Mill in Newtownabbey on 6 March. The gathering, named 'We See You', focused on carers from across the borough and those they support.
Professor Suzanne Martin from Ulster University gave a keynote address. She discussed her research in occupational therapy and her experiences as a carer and mother.
Dr James Martin attended the event. He engaged with guests to support carers and their families.
Joleen Cunningham from Carers Northern Ireland spoke at the event. She addressed challenges for women managing caring duties alongside employment.
Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, attended alongside Deputy Mayor Councillor Julie Gilmour. Kirkpatrick noted that unpaid care provides significant social and economic value but often lacks recognition.
Attendees visited information stands. The stands offered advice, services and connections to support networks for carers.
The council presented the event as part of its efforts to support carers year-round.
