Antrim and Newtownabbey Council Hosts Event for Carers on International Women's Day
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council held an event called 'We See You' on International Women's Day to recognise carers. The gathering took place in the borough and included carers and those they support.
Professor Suzanne Martin from Ulster University gave a keynote address. She spoke about her experience as a carer and mother. Her son, James Martin, attended the event.
Joleen Cunningham from Carers Northern Ireland addressed the group. She noted the essential role of carers, many of whom are women.
Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, spoke at the event. She stated that unpaid care supports the economy but often lacks recognition. Kirkpatrick said carers frequently give up career and personal well-being options. As a parent of autistic children, she stressed the need for awareness, resources, and respect for carers to benefit the community.
Attendees visited information stands with support services and community networks for carers.
