Tribute Concert to Joni Mitchell Set for Derry Church
A tribute concert titled This Flight Tonight - The Songs of Joni Mitchell takes place at St Augustine’s Church in Derry on Saturday, March 21. Doors open at 6:45pm and the performance starts at 7:30pm. Tickets cost £26.79.
The show features open-tuned acoustic and electric guitars, piano, dulcimer, conga, bass and vocal harmonies. It presents songs including California, Blue, Woodstock, Both Sides Now, Carey, Coyote and A Case of You.
Lead singer Kathryn Pepper described the performers as musical purists who seek to replicate every note and pause in Mitchell’s recordings to convey the music’s essence.
Guitarist Paul Zervas stated that he studied Mitchell’s guitar catalogue, including alternate tunings and harmonic details, to honour the balance of intricacy and emotion in her songs.
St Augustine’s Church in Derry hosts various cultural events. Joni Mitchell, a Canadian singer-songwriter, gained fame in the 1960s and 1970s for folk and rock music linked to the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles.
