The Other Voices music festival is returning to Londonderry this weekend after a 13-year absence.

Founder Philip King said the two-day event will make the city 'visible and audible' on the global music stage. Performances will be streamed worldwide on the Other Voices YouTube channel and filmed for television.

Organizers expect about 24,000 people to attend in person, generating an estimated £1.5 million for the local economy. The festival, marking its 25th anniversary, begins a three-year commitment to Derry.

BRIT Award-winning singer-songwriter Kate Nash is among the headline acts. Other performers include Donegal blues musician Muireann Bradley, band Tramp, Brògeal, Derry band The Marra, UK soul artist Debbie, Dublin group Basht, Dublin four-piece Bleech 9:3, and Manchester-based quartet Westside Cowboy.

Tramp lead singer Siánna Ní Laithbheartaigh said performing on a platform with global reach is significant for a band from the north west. 'It can feel like there aren't many opportunities in Derry to perform as a band beyond an open mic night or a bar,' she said.

Venues include St Columb's Hall, New Gate Arts and Culture Centre, Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, the Nerve Centre and the Playhouse. A wider Music Trail will feature almost 50 live performances across the city.

King said Derry's year as UK City of Culture in 2013 was a 'revelatory experience' but that some legacy opportunities were missed. He said the festival aims to build on that legacy.
