Newry, Mourne and Down Civic Awards Recognise Community Contributors
The Newry, Mourne and Down District Council held its Civic Awards ceremony at the Millbrook Lodge Hotel in Ballynahinch, hosted by Councillor Philip Campbell. The event, presented by BBC Radio Ulster’s Connor Phillips, recognised individuals and groups for contributions in volunteering, community pride, fundraising, arts, culture, heritage, youth leadership and human endeavour.
Winners were announced across seven categories following a public nominations campaign. The Chairperson’s Award went to Cian McEvoy from Castlewellan, who won gold at the 2025 WUKF European Championship despite a congenital heart condition. McEvoy, accepting the award, urged others to 'just believe in yourself'.
Other recipients included Gervase McCartan from Newry, who received the Fundraising Award for raising over £1.25 million for Cancer Research over 40 years; Rachel Carvill, 17, from Mayobridge, for the Youth Impact Award as a Taekwondo black belt and boxer; and Iúr Cinn Fleadh, a volunteer-led festival in Newry, for the Arts, Culture and Heritage Award.
The evening featured a drinks reception, dinner and a charity raffle supporting The Laurence Trust and Head Injury Support. Councillor Campbell described the awards as a highlight that showcases community compassion and resilience.
