Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Hosts Sports Awards at Slieve Donard Hotel
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Sports Association Newry, Down and South Armagh held the NMD Sports Awards on 20 March at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle. Over 300 guests attended the event, which recognised achievements in sport during 2025.
Thomas Niblock hosted the evening. A panel discussion featured participants from the Physical Activity Referral Scheme and Cardiac Rehabilitation programmes. Panel members described joining the programmes to improve health and preparing for the Belfast Marathon.
Councillor Philip Campbell, chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, stated the awards recognise athletes' achievements and the work of coaches and volunteers. He noted the council's commitment to supporting sport from grassroots to elite levels.
Oonagh Murray, chairperson of SANDSA, called it a privilege to celebrate dedication in the sporting community and congratulated all nominees.
Award winners included Darran McQuoid of Drumaness Mills FC for Sports Volunteer of the Year. Shannon Connor of Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club received Sports Coach of the Year. Tom Williamson of Down Triathlon Club won Sportsperson or Team of the Year with Disability.
Rachael Carvill of Taekwondo earned Junior Sportsperson of the Year. Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club took Junior Club Team of the Year. Warrenpoint Golf Club's All-Ireland Barton Shield Team won Senior Team of the Year.
Darrel Wilson of Archery received Senior Sportsperson of the Year. Nicola Henry accepted Lifetime Services to Sport on behalf of her late father Rory Friel.
