Derry & Strabane Council's planning committee has approved a development of 33 new homes in Eglinton. The plan includes 20 semi-detached and 13 detached houses, along with landscaping and associated works, on land west of 1 Wheatfield, opposite the Carmoney Road / Mallory Park junction.

The site is currently an open agricultural field with tree and hedgerow boundaries. The approved layout has nine dwellings facing the roadside.

During the application process, the council received 11 objections raising concerns about overdevelopment, traffic and road safety, sewerage impact, flooding, and loss of property value. One objector noted that amendments increased road-facing houses from five to nine and raised overlooking concerns. The applicant's spokesperson stated there would be over 40 metres separation from the neighbouring property, so no unacceptable overlooking would occur.

The spokesperson also said the project is a substantial private investment, will take two years to build, support up to 50 construction jobs, and deliver much-needed private housing for the village.

SDLP councillor John Boyle proposed approval, saying that while objections were considered, this was a very strong application and there is a clear need for more housing in Eglinton and across the district.
