Irvinestown Credit Union Marks Community Role Ahead of International Credit Union Day
Irvinestown Credit Union is highlighting its role in the local community ahead of International Credit Union Day on October 15.
Established in 1971, the organisation now serves 4,377 members and holds total shares of £10.7 million. It currently has 767 borrowing members and 869 members under the age of 16, whose combined savings amount to £1.3 million.
Office manager John Lynch, who has been with the credit union since 1981, noted changes over the years, including computerisation and new regulations from the PRA and SCA. Despite these shifts, he said the organisation remains focused on helping local people.
The credit union offers loans of up to £30,000 and special facilities of up to £4,000 for members with limited savings. At its annual general meeting, it operates an interest rebate scheme; last year members received rebates of up to 40 percent.
Through the Irish League of Credit Unions, the organisation also contributes annually to the International Development Foundation, which supports credit union development worldwide.
Irvinestown Credit Union operates with a staff of three.
