Police in the Newry, Mourne and Down district seized 29 vehicles over the weekend in an operation targeting illegal use of e-scooters and other motorised devices on public roads and footpaths.

The two-day operation on Saturday and Sunday resulted in the seizure of 25 e-scooters, three e-scramblers and one petrol scrambler, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Paul Moore said the force intends to continue targeting the use of such vehicles on public spaces. He warned that any detected on roads, footpaths or other public areas will be seized.

Moore also urged people not to purchase e-scooters or similar vehicles as gifts, given that their use in public places is illegal.

Police described the operation as proactive and said further seizures are expected as part of efforts to keep public spaces safe.

In Northern Ireland, it is illegal to use e-scooters on public roads and footpaths. They can only be used on private land with the landowner's permission.
