A man from Drumquin, County Tyrone, has been remembered as a devoted family man and committed parishioner following his death at the age of 88.

Gerry O’Kane, of Dooish Road, passed away peacefully at South West Acute Hospital surrounded by his family.

His Requiem Mass was held at St Patrick’s Church, Langfield, Drumquin, where Fr Paul Fraser spoke about Mr O’Kane’s life and contributions.

Fr Fraser said that Mr O’Kane’s absence would be felt in many places, including the parish bingo which he helped establish and attended every Sunday until the final stages of his life.

Mr O’Kane was educated at Dooish school and worked on the family farm until he was 25, when he married his wife Liz.

After building their home, he worked for PJ McCanney, Moffatt’s Quarry, and the Nestle Factory, but spent the majority of his working life with the Milk Marketing Board, where he collected milk from local farms for almost 28 years.

Following early retirement, Mr O’Kane found it difficult to remain idle and returned to work, driving for Moffatt’s Quarry for another six years and volunteering for the parish.

Fr Fraser said Mr O’Kane’s strong work ethic was instilled from an early age and that he would be remembered as a great family man and friend.

Interment took place afterwards in Langfield Old Cemetery.

Mr O’Kane is survived by his wife Liz (nee McElhill), daughters Mairead McNamee (Paul) and Donna, son Martin (Ciara), and grandchildren Aoibheann, Áine, Caoimhe, Cormac, Enda and Erin.
