The Western Health and Social Care Trust held its Excellence in Social Work Recognition Event, bringing together staff nominated for the Regional Social Work Awards 2026. The gathering celebrated the contributions of social workers across the region.

Trust Chief Executive Karen Hargan spoke about the significant effect social workers have on people they support, often during times of crisis and change. She thanked staff for their compassion, resilience and dedication.

Interim Executive Director of Social Work Stephen McLaughlin said excellence is often found in quiet, consistent acts of care, advocacy and professional judgement. He said the nominations demonstrated the values, commitment and expertise across the Trust.

The event included award categories covering practice, leadership, learning, teamwork, innovation and advocacy. Nomination stories highlighted support for families in crisis, empowerment of individuals facing adversity and championship of vulnerable people.

Incoming Interim Executive Director of Social Work Kevin Duffy encouraged colleagues to take pride in their achievements and celebrate one another more often. He called for a continued culture where excellence is recognised, valued and shared.
