The future of the Movilla Stones, a collection of 13th-century Anglo-Norman coffin lids removed from Movilla Abbey, is to be the subject of official talks between Ards and North Down Borough Council and the Historic Environment Division (HED) of the Department for Communities.

The carved stones were taken from the site in 2018 for restoration and conservation. They had been built into a section of the abbey's north wall and are regarded as one of the most important groups of carved artefacts in Northern Ireland. The artefacts are currently in storage.

Alderman Stephen McIlveen has been campaigning for the stones' return to the borough for five years. He brought a motion instructing council officers to engage with HED on the matter. His party colleague Michelle McIlveen MLA submitted written questions to the Communities Minister, and the most recent response indicated that HED was now considering options.

Following contact with the department and the council, Alderman McIlveen received confirmation that a meeting will take place soon between HED and council officers. The discussions will examine potential locations within the borough that can guarantee public access and provide for the stones' long-term conservation.

Alderman McIlveen stated that there is a desire to see the artefacts returned, but the key question is finding a suitable site. He noted that a temporary solution may be considered while a permanent home is secured.
