A woman was arrested in Newtownabbey on Sunday after a roadside breath test recorded a reading almost five times the legal drink-drive limit.

Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Roads Policing Unit were on patrol when they received a report that a drink driver had struck a wall. They attended the crash scene, located the vehicle and identified the driver.

The female driver provided a roadside breath sample of 172. The legal limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The result was nearly five times that threshold.

With support from Local Policing Team officers, the driver was arrested and taken into custody.

A PSNI spokesperson stated that drink driving can lead to devastating outcomes and that a collision involving this level of intoxication was difficult to comprehend. The spokesperson added that no one was injured thanks to a prompt report from residents and the officers' response.
