A court heard that police stopped a black van in the Moore Street area of Aughnacloy at 11.55 pm on 2 May after checks showed the vehicle had no insurance.

Owen Joseph McCaughey, 48, of Gortlenaghan Road, Dungannon, admitted he had no insurance when approached by officers.

Police reported a strong smell of alcohol, slurred speech, and glazed eyes. McCaughey refused a preliminary breath test and was arrested.

At Dungannon custody suite he provided a breath specimen measuring 76 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

McCaughey told the court he was sorry and had not drunk since the incident. He said he had a bad relationship with alcohol and asked the court not to disqualify him from driving because he needed his licence for work and to see his children.

He was fined a total of £500 plus a £15 offender levy for driving with excess alcohol, failing to provide a preliminary breath specimen, and driving without insurance.
