A fire on Saturday caused extensive damage to Fiddler’s Cottage guesthouse in Kesh, County Fermanagh. The owner, Derek Moore, issued a statement on Sunday confirming that the property, which was both his home and business, was destroyed.

No lives were lost in the incident. Moore said that remained the most important fact amid the loss.

He thanked the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and the Police Service of Northern Ireland for their response. He also paid tribute to neighbours and particularly to Gary Jennings, who took guests to the Mayfly premises, provided food and warmth, and gave food to emergency services personnel at the scene.

Moore described the property as a place that had become a sanctuary for many people over the years. He said he had been deeply touched by messages recalling stays, special occasions and friendships made there.

He asked the public not to speculate about the cause of the fire. Social media commentary containing false information was adding to the family’s distress at an already difficult time, he said.

Bookings at the guesthouse had extended well into next year. Moore said he would contact everyone affected in due course and asked for patience while the family dealt with the immediate aftermath.

He said the kindness shown since the fire, including offers of places to stay, practical help and messages of comfort, had been overwhelming and would never be forgotten.
