Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that discussion of a Border poll on Irish unity makes him extremely irritated.

In an interview with The Irish Times, Mr Martin said he finds such talk exasperating. He also noted that his government had secured the Good Friday Agreement, which he described as a key achievement.

The 1998 Agreement includes a mechanism for a Border poll: the British government can call one if it believes a majority in Northern Ireland would vote for unification. Nationalist parties have consistently urged the Irish government to begin preparing for that possibility.
