Ards and North Down Borough Council has inducted cyclist Martyn Irvine and boxer Davy Larmour into its Sporting Wall of Fame. The ceremony took place at Ards Blair Mayne Leisure and Wellbeing Complex in Newtownards.

Mayor Craig Blaney led the event, which was attended by family members, friends, elected representatives, sporting representatives and community leaders. Irvine was present at the ceremony. Larmour was unable to attend but was recognised for his sporting achievements and his contribution to boxing.

The Sporting Wall of Fame honours individuals who have reached the highest levels of sporting achievement while also making a significant contribution to the development and promotion of sport within their communities.

Irvine is one of Ireland's most successful cyclists and was a world champion in track cycling. Since retiring from elite competition, he has continued to support and develop future generations of cyclists.

Larmour represented Ireland and won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He has used sport as a positive force to inspire young people and strengthen communities.

During the ceremony, the mayor noted that both inductees demonstrated dedication, perseverance, leadership and commitment. He said sporting success is rarely achieved alone, and tribute was paid to parents, family members, friends, coaches and volunteers who supported the athletes.

The mayor also said that sport is about more than winning, with the power to build confidence, strengthen communities, improve health and wellbeing, and bring people together. He said both Irvine and Larmour had displayed these values throughout their lives and careers.
