Residents of several rural communities in Mid Ulster are facing prolonged fly infestations during warm weather, prompting a councillor to demand new measures from the district council.

At a recent meeting of Mid Ulster District Council's Environment Committee, committee chair Donna Mullin said the problem persists year after year in Pomeroy, Kildress and The Rock despite repeated complaints. She described homes becoming inundated with flies, making it impossible for families to eat inside or outside their houses.

The councillor questioned what actions had been taken and expressed frustration that there has been no improvement. She suggested officials look at steps used in other areas that have dealt with similar issues.

Mullin had previously raised the matter in July 2025, calling it a severe disruption to daily life for families and elderly residents rather than a mere seasonal nuisance. She noted she lives in the affected area and has been in regular contact with the council's environmental health team.

According to her, residents feel left uninformed and are growing increasingly frustrated. She stressed the need for answers and swift action.
