A new exhibition by two local artists has opened at the Curve Gallery inside Bangor Library, County Down. Emma Van Houten and Louise Macartney are showing work under the title ‘Art Is Good For You’, running until 1 August.

Van Houten teaches at St Colombanus’ College and also organises monthly ‘Sip and Paint’ gatherings in Helen’s Bay. Macartney stepped away from art for four decades after completing a foundation course at Ulster University and only recently returned to painting. She said that receiving an ADHD referral helped her accept her own creative process.

The exhibition’s name reflects the pair’s belief that making art supports mental wellbeing and builds social connections. They are encouraging others to join local art classes and groups.

Several students from St Columbanus College, where Van Houten teaches, also have work included in the show, giving them an opportunity to exhibit in a public space.

An open afternoon will be held at the gallery on Saturday 25 July from 2pm to 4pm, giving visitors a chance to meet the artists and discuss the work.
