Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service has opened applications for wholetime firefighters. The recruitment window began on Monday 20 July 2026 and closes at 12 noon on Monday 3 August 2026.

Wholetime firefighters work full-time from stations located throughout Northern Ireland. Their duties cover a broad range of emergencies, including fires, floods, road traffic collisions, animal rescues, chemical spills and specialist rescue operations. In addition to emergency response, firefighters deliver community safety initiatives and fire safety education aimed at preventing incidents.

The service stresses the physical demands of the role and the need to maintain high fitness standards throughout a career. Tabitha Ramsay, NIFRS Director of People & Culture, described firefighting as a challenging but fulfilling occupation. She noted that successful applicants will serve their communities as part of a dedicated team, both through emergency calls and preventive work. Ramsay urged potential candidates to consider carefully whether the role suits them before applying, highlighting the resilience and commitment required.
