A 77-year-old man died when his tractor crashed on a rural road near Omagh, prompting his family to call for urgent safety improvements.

Dessie Sheridan was driving his Massey Ferguson 185 tractor on the Tullycunny Road, between Fintona and Omagh, on Saturday, June 20. He was returning home after visiting his brother when the vehicle left the road and fell into an adjacent field.

His niece, Emma McCrea, has urged the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) to address what she describes as dangerous conditions. She said the grass verge has worn away over years, leaving a steep drop into a field that poses a hazard to motorists.

Ms McCrea said traffic on the road has increased significantly, including delivery drivers and young agricultural workers. She warned that without safety measures, another family could face a similar tragedy.

She said residents regularly help pull vehicles back onto the road after they slip over the edge, putting themselves at risk. She called for DfI officials to meet with residents and assess the road.

A DfI spokesperson offered sympathies to Mr Sheridan’s family and said the department would work with the Police Service of Northern Ireland to assist the investigation into the collision.
