A new women’s shed will officially launch this Saturday at the Moneydarragh Hub near Annalong. The Mourne Hen Shed is open to women aged 18 and over from the greater Mourne area.

The launch event runs from 10am to noon and will allow attendees to meet the committee, complete application forms, and propose ideas for future courses and workshops.

The initiative was developed by Kay Nellis and Geri Smyth. Kay Nellis said they wanted a dedicated space for women to learn new skills or revive old ones. Both had been attending a local men’s shed weekly for woodworking but saw the need for a women-only facility with more frequent sessions.

After putting out feelers, the idea received strong interest. Kay Nellis reported that they were overwhelmed by expressions of support.

The shed will begin welcoming members at the start of September. Activities planned for the first term include creative, educational, social, and practical courses. Members can choose which activities to join.

The purpose is to offer a supportive environment where women can try new things. Kay Nellis said the programme will be shaped by members’ interests and needs. She also hopes the shed will help women expand their friendship circles and become intergenerational.
