US Presidents Trail to Highlight Northern Ireland Connections
A new tourism trail highlighting ancestral connections between 23 United States presidents and the island of Ireland is under development, with Northern Ireland featuring prominently in the plans.
The initiative is part of America250, the Irish government's programme marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, and will run into 2027. It is being delivered in partnership with the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland and local authorities.
Among the presidents with Northern Irish heritage are Woodrow Wilson, whose roots are in Tyrone, William McKinley, linked to Antrim, and James Buchanan, with connections to both Tyrone and Donegal. Fine Gael TD Edward Timmins, who proposed the trail last year, noted that many other US leaders also have ties to the region.
Each ancestral site will be marked by a native tree and an information panel. Two literary guides are planned: a general-audience edition before July 4th celebrations and a children's version in the autumn.
Minister of State Charlie McConalogue said the trail is a key part of the commemorations and will follow principles of respectful remembrance, historical authenticity, inclusivity and accessibility. He said it aims to leave a lasting legacy through cultural, educational and tourism benefits.
Mr Timmins has produced a roadmap identifying key counties with presidential links, stretching from Antrim to Offaly, Wexford and Mayo. He believes the route could eventually become a tourist attraction comparable to the Wild Atlantic Way, drawing significant international interest from the millions of Americans who claim Irish ancestry.
