A driver escaped injury after an attempted hijacking in Cookstown on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred between 2.10pm and 2.15pm on East Circular Road, close to the Beechway area. A number of males dressed in dark clothing, masks and gloves were standing on the footpath when the driver approached.

Two of the males stepped in front of the vehicle, forcing it to stop. A third opened the driver’s door and attempted to pull the man from his seat, tearing his top in the process. The driver accelerated away and was unhurt.

Detective Inspector Ryan said an investigation is under way and appealed for witnesses or anyone with mobile phone or dash cam footage to contact police. The number to call is 101, quoting reference 1103 of 10/06/26.
