Augmented Reality App Brings Digital Guide to Historic Belfast Warehouse
A free augmented reality app has launched alongside the Outpouring installation at a historic Belfast warehouse. The app introduces a digital character named Mr Riddel, who guides visitors through the space using their mobile phones.
Developed with Belfast technology firm Hamilton Robson, the app uses motion capture and photography to create a three-dimensional appearance for Mr Riddel. The character is voiced by Belfast actor Marty Maguire, who has over 40 years of stage and screen experience. Maguire is currently making his West End debut in Sinatra The Musical.
Upon entering, visitors answer a series of questions that curate a personalised journey. They are then encouraged to explore student artworks from across Northern Ireland and to reflect on voices often overlooked. The app transforms visitors into participants by allowing them to contribute their own thoughts to a growing digital collection.
The project is funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs through the Reconciliation Fund, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland via a Digital Evolution Award, and the BFI. It aims to connect the building's 150-year history with the perspectives of young people today.
