Police treating Maydown derelict building fire as arson
Police are treating a fire at a large derelict building on the outskirts of Londonderry as arson. The blaze broke out at the former North West Regional College facility on Carrakeel Drive in Maydown on Sunday evening.
Officers on patrol noticed the fire shortly after 5.20pm and alerted the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. Crews from Northland Road, Crescent Link, and Dungiven attended, using two jets to bring the flames under control. Firefighters left the scene at 8.14pm.
A fire service spokesperson said the cause was believed to be deliberate ignition. The building was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported.
Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area on Sunday evening, or who has CCTV or other footage, to contact them on 101.
