A Community Rescue Cadet Scheme for people aged 16 and over begins this month in Strabane. Weekly sessions will take place on Wednesdays at 7pm in the Greater Ballycolman Community Hub Centre.

The programme is open to all young people regardless of experience, and organisers say it provides a structured environment for building practical skills, leadership, and confidence. The scheme is run through Community Rescue Service.

Ivan Barr, the programme facilitator, said the cadets give young people who may not have seen themselves joining the emergency services a chance to develop their potential and pursue a future career in the sector. He noted that the training supports progression into the full Community Rescue Service as a volunteer and can lead toward roles as paramedics or firefighters.

Activities include boating and water safety, map reading and navigation, radio communications, first aid, and search techniques. Participants will also try adventure disciplines such as abseiling, alongside team-building exercises and community projects.

No previous qualifications are needed. Organisers look for enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to get involved.

Enrolment is open now, with registration available online.
