DAERA Pledges £2m to Rural Community Infrastructure
Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir has announced £2 million in additional funding for the Northern Ireland Community Infrastructure Fund. The money is aimed at meeting demand from rural areas and will be distributed as capital grants to community and voluntary organisations to improve existing buildings.
The fund is delivered by the Department for Communities with support from DAERA. Minister Muir said the contribution reflects his department's commitment to rural communities and welcomed the joint working with the Department for Communities.
During a visit to Ballylone Rural Development Association, Minister Muir saw how the funding will be used. Ballylone RDA has been awarded £40,000 for internal improvements including better accessibility and a new kitchen. These upgrades aim to make the facility more welcoming and support a wider range of community activities.
Minister Muir noted that nearly 60 per cent of letters of offer from the fund have gone to rural organisations. He said community facilities are essential for rural life, providing spaces for social connection, wellbeing and local services. The new investment is intended to ensure as many rural groups as possible can benefit.
