Whiterocks Beach in Portrush placed second in a national ranking of UK beaches where visitors are least likely to mention litter.

The ranking was compiled by plastic waste management firm BusinessWaste.co.uk using Tripadvisor review data.

Three beaches in the top ten recorded no reviews mentioning litter: Whitesands Bay in Wales, Tyrella Beach in County Down, and Whiterocks Beach.

The ranking contrasts with conditions recorded on 2 May when RNLI lifeguards cleared more than 20 bags of rubbish, including broken glass, from Whiterocks after a reported school leavers' party.

The debris filled three council bins. RNLI stated the litter posed risks to wildlife, families and people walking barefoot.

Members of the public alerted RNLI staff and began clearing the area before lifeguards arrived.

The incident affected multiple beaches along the coastline.
