Justice Minister Naomi Long has opened a public consultation on a proposal to close Limavady Courthouse permanently and dispose of the building.

The courthouse has been closed since March 2020. Adult Magistrates Court cases from Limavady are currently heard at Coleraine Courthouse.

The consultation forms part of the NI Courts and Tribunals Service Estate Strategy, which sets out four aims and twelve strategic outcomes aimed at modernising court facilities across Northern Ireland.

The Minister stated that evidence shows Limavady Courthouse falls below required standards and that physical and financial constraints prevent necessary improvements.

She noted that the move of cases to Coleraine has given users access to improved facilities.

The public is invited to submit views on the proposal and on potential future uses of the building.

The consultation runs until 21 August 2026.
