St Oliver Plunkett Primary School in Derry has added weightlifting to its Primary 7 curriculum.

A six-week programme introduced pupils to basic lifting techniques and safety practices.

The school secured additional training for teacher Mr James Lagan, who now holds a coaching qualification.

Mr Lagan now leads the sessions internally, allowing the programme to continue without further external funding.

Pupils learned multiple lifts and gained knowledge of strength and conditioning principles.

The school said participants enjoyed the sessions and that those involved in team sports gained appreciation for strength training.

The programme has entered a second year under school arrangements.
