Economy Minister Launches Geothermal Energy Regulation Consultation
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald launched a public consultation on proposals for a new regulatory framework for geothermal energy in Northern Ireland. The launch took place at the GeoEnergy Discovery Centre during this year's Balmoral Show.
Geothermal energy uses natural heat stored underground to heat buildings. It provides a low-carbon energy source. Northern Ireland is the first jurisdiction in the UK and Ireland to consult on detailed geothermal regulation.
Dr Archibald stated that decarbonising heat presents a major challenge. She noted that geothermal energy supplies a secure, local low-carbon option for homes, businesses, and district heating. This helps shield consumers from global energy price spikes.
The minister said further development is required for geothermal energy to meet future heating needs. She indicated this would build investor confidence and generate local skilled green jobs.
Proposals include new legislation for clear rules on larger geothermal developments. Small-scale domestic installations will remain accessible. The framework aims to deliver clean affordable heat, protect the environment, and consider urban and rural communities.
Dr Archibald said public views will influence geothermal regulation and use of this local resource. The consultation runs from 15 May to 7 August 2026. It is available at the Department for the Economy website.
