DUP MLA Marion Middleton addressed the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont following sectarian attacks in Derry's Fountain and Bishop Street interface area last week.

Middleton stated that missiles including masonry, petrol bombs and fireworks struck homes in the residential Fountain area, where vulnerable adults, elderly residents and children live.

She noted constant contact with the PSNI during the disturbances and welcomed their increased patrols.

The Foyle representative called for a robust and consistent response against perpetrators, along with a proactive strategy to prevent such gatherings before they begin.

Middleton said the attacks aim to intimidate residents, isolate them and force them from their homes.

She stressed that those responsible damage their neighbours' peace of mind, well-being and mental health, with psychological effects harder to repair than physical property damage.

Middleton affirmed she will not allow the community to be targeted.
