Derry Driver Avoids Penalty After Falling Victim to Insurance Scam
A 20-year-old driver from Melmore Gardens in Derry faced no penalty after a court accepted her guilty plea to driving without insurance.
Amie Donaghey was stopped by police on Rossdowney Road on August 27. Checks at the time indicated her vehicle lacked coverage. She provided bank statements showing payments to an insurance broker.
Her defence solicitor, Derwin Harvey, informed the court the broker operated a scam. Donaghey had selected the broker online and believed her car was insured.
District Judge Oonagh Mullan determined special reasons applied in the case. A prosecutor confirmed the judge held discretion to waive any penalty or points under these circumstances.
The court accepted the plea without imposing disqualification, points, or other penalties.
