Amie Donaghey, 20, from Melmore Gardens in Derry, faces a charge of driving without insurance. Police stopped her on Rossdowney Road on August 27 and checks showed no coverage.

Donaghey provided bank statements proving payments to an insurance broker. Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey told Derry Magistrate’s Court on Friday that the broker operated a scam.

Harvey stated Donaghey had selected the broker online and informed police of the fraud. He requested no penalty since she believed coverage existed.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan considered dismissing the charge. A prosecutor noted legal requirements for either disqualification or penalty points.

The judge adjourned the case to May 8 for written prosecution submissions.
