Joe Hagen, a 69-year-old from Bangor, has stayed in the fracture ward at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for 229 days since his hip fracture on December 18. He requires specialist care for Alzheimer's disease, which has worsened during his hospital stay.

Hagen fell outside a supermarket in Ballyholme while using a wheelchair. Ambulance delays at Ulster Hospital in County Down led to his transfer to Royal Victoria Hospital, where surgeons replaced his hip.

His wife Sharon Hagen, 62, cared for him at home prior to the fall. She reports he now receives limited stimulation in the acute ward, where staff prioritize patients awaiting surgery or with recent injuries.

Sharon Hagen states her husband struggles with feeding himself and lacks one-to-one care due to staffing shortages. Psychiatrists assessed him at the end of January after initial delays, during which he experienced distress.

She fought to bring his wheelchair to the ward for bathroom access and family outings. Patients and staff frequently change, leaving him without familiar faces.

Hagen also has heart failure and prostate cancer. He has lost significant weight since admission.
