Police in Carryduff treated a fire that destroyed two cars in a driveway as arson. The incident occurred at 04:45 BST on Wednesday in the Killynure Green area of County Down. One vehicle caught fire first and the blaze spread to the second car parked alongside it.

A child and a woman were inside the house at the time. Local resident Elise Conroy heard popping sounds, saw the flames, and alerted the neighbours by shouting outside the property. The woman and child escaped without injury.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the blaze with police at the scene. PSNI Inspector McCorry stated extensive damage occurred to both vehicles. Enquiries continue to establish the events, those involved, and any motive.

No injuries were reported. Inspector McCorry noted the potential for more serious outcomes given the house occupants. Police requested information using reference 149 06/05/26 via 101, the non-emergency online form, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Alliance Castlereagh South Councillor Jamie Harpur contacted residents including young families distressed by the event. He spoke with PSNI about the investigation and plans to work with police and council officers for community safety.

DUP Castlereagh South Councillor Brian Higginson attended the area early on Thursday. He thanked community members who assisted the resident's escape and condemned the attack.
