Carrickfergus Man Jailed for Damaging Ambulance Equipment
Joel Simpson, 24, from Minorca Drive in Carrickfergus, faces a two-month jail term after an incident on March 3, 2024.
Police found Simpson intoxicated and behaving erratically in Carrickfergus. They transported him by ambulance to Antrim Area Hospital.
During the journey, Simpson kicked, screamed obscenities, and tried to chew through electrical equipment in the ambulance. Officers applied handcuffs and limb restraints.
At the hospital, Simpson directed abusive language at police officers.
Simpson appeared at Antrim Magistrates Court in Ballymena via video link from prison, where he was on remand for a separate matter.
His defence barrister stated that he was under the influence of substances and facing mental health issues at the time. The barrister noted that Simpson recognises his actions were inappropriate and wants to apologise to police and medical staff.
