Carrickfergus Man Receives Probation Order After Common Assault Conviction
Paul Hughes, 37, from Victoria Rise in Carrickfergus, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court on a charge of common assault and using threatening or abusive behaviour.
The incident took place on December 13, 2025. Police received a report from the injured party that Hughes, who had consumed alcohol during the day, refused to leave her property. He spat at her, striking her head, and acted aggressively. This was recorded on a Ring doorbell camera.
Hughes was arrested. In his police interview, he acknowledged an altercation occurred but denied spitting on the injured party. Police found drugs on him during the incident and issued a caution.
The Public Prosecution Service requested a restraining order. The defence said Hughes recognised his behaviour was unacceptable, described the incident as unnecessary, and offered apologies.
District Judge Rosie Watters imposed a two-year probation order. She told Hughes the probation provided a chance to address his issues and expressed hope it would support his progress. She also granted a two-year restraining order.
