Gathering Stitches Festival Returns to WWT Castle Espie
The Gathering Stitches Festival takes place at WWT Castle Espie with support from Ards and North Down Borough Council. Organised by Inspiring Yarns CIC, a social enterprise based in Ards, the event runs on May 9 and the following day.
Local makers and textile artists present handmade goods and craft supplies at a marketplace. Workshops cover Dorset and Yorkshire button making, steeking, painting with thread, wet felting and sewing for all skill levels.
A panel discussion on Saturday, May 9, hosted by BBC presenter Eve Blair, examines heritage textiles manufacturing and its effects on sustainability, local farming and the environment.
Sensory-friendly hours run from 10am to 11am each day. Entry includes standard admission to WWT Castle Espie wetlands.
Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Gillian McCollum, stated the council supports the festival to highlight local talent, sustainable practices and wellbeing through creativity. Claire Anketell of Inspiring Yarns said the event focuses on textile artists, skill-building and mental health benefits. WWT Castle Espie centre manager Paul Stewart noted the partnership blends creativity with natural surroundings.
